1st Category: Soloists

All pieces must be performed by heart.
(The candidates are not obliged to cover the maximum performing time.)

Group A΄ (candidates up to 18 years old):

Eliminatory Round: (Maximum performing time: 30 minutes)

  a. A two-part or three-part Invention or Prelude and Fugue from the «Wohltemperierte Klavier» by Johann Sebastian Bach.
  b. One Etude by Cramer or Clementi or Czerny or Moszkovski or Chopin or Liszt or Skriabin or Rachmaninov or Debussy.
  c. One quick movement of a Sonata by Haydn or Mozart or Beethoven.

Final Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  a. A romantic work of the candidate’s choice.
  b. A 20th century work.

Group B΄ (candidates up to 36 years old):

Preliminatory Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  a. A Prelude and a Fugue from the «Wohltemperierte Klavier» by Johann Sebastian Bach.
  b. One Etude by Chopin or Liszt or Mendelssohn or Moszkovski or Skriabin or Rachmaninov or Debussy.
  c. One Sonata by Haydn or Mozart or Beethoven. (The Jury has the right to listen to one movement of the Sonata or to the whole Sonata)

Semifinal Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  a. A Sonata by Scarlatti or a work by another harpsichord (clavecinist) composer.
  b. An important romantic work.
  c. A 20th century work.

Final Round:

  A Concert for Piano and Orchestra from Bach or Haydn or Mozart or Beethoven or Mendelssohn or Chopin or Schuman or 1st of Liszt.

The candidate will be accompanied by the invited Orchestra «Sofia Soloists».

2nd Category: 4 hands

It is not obligatory to perform the pieces by heart.
(The candidates are not obliged to cover the maximum performing time.)

Group A΄ (candidates up to 18 years old):

Preliminatory Round: (Maximum performing time: 20 minutes)

  a. A quick movement of a Sonata by Mozart.
  b. One work of the candidate’s choice not exceeding 10 minutes in duration.

Final Round: (Maximum performing time: 25 minutes)

  A programme of the candidate’s choice. 
(If the candidates wish so, they can repeat one of the works they performed in the previous round.)

Group B΄ (candidates up to 36 years old):

Preliminatory Round: (Maximum performing time: 35 minutes)

  a. One work of the candidate’s choice, pre-classical or classical.
  b. One work of the candidate’s choice not exceeding 15 minutes in duration.

Final Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  A programme of the candidate’s choice. 
(If the candidates wish so, they can repeat one of the works they performed in the previous round.)

* In Group Β΄ transcriptions are allowed only if they are done by the composer himself.

3rd Category: 2 pianos

It is not obligatory to perform the pieces by heart.
(The candidates are not obliged to cover the maximum performing time.)

(Candidates without age limit)

Preliminatory Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  a. One work of the candidate’s choice, pre-classical or classical.
  b. One romantic or 20th century work.

Final Round: (Maximum performing time: 40 minutes)

  A programme of the candidate’s choice.
(If the candidates wish so, they can repeat one of the works they performed in the previous round.)

* Transcriptions are allowed only if they are done by the composer himself.

COMPETITION RULES

  1.  The «International SEILER Piano Competition – Rethymno 2006», is open to candidates of all nationalities.
  2. The Competition is divided in 3 Categories: 1st Category: Soloists, 2nd Category: 4 hands, 3rd Category: 2 pianos. The 1st and the 2nd Category are divided in two Groups:  A΄ and B΄.
  3. Groups A΄ are open to participants born after 24-9-1988 and Groups B΄ are open to participants born after 24-9-1970. There is no age limit for the 3rd Category: 2 pianos.
  4. Each candidate can participate in more than one Categories but not in two Groups of the same Category.
  5. The competition performances will take place in Rethymno, Crete, from 15-9-2006 to 24-9-2006 and the entrance will be free.
  6. The Jury consists of famous piano Professors and Soloists from different nations. The Jury can interrupt the competitors at any time for any reason while performing. The Jury’s decisions are final and irrevocable. After the first round, the members of the Jury will be available to those competitors who have failed to qualify, for personal interviews regarding their performances.
  7. The order of appearance of all competitors in each category will be defined by draw which will take place on 15-9-2006 at 8:00 p.m. at the Hellenic Conservatory Concert Hall, where all competitors must be present.
  8. All competitors will be able to practice on a piano in strict rotation. In order to be able to access easily the practice halls, they would rather choose one of the suggested hotels with the price offers that are given specially for this competition.
  9. In all Categories, all the pieces should be performed without repeats.
  10. It is obligatory to perform by heart all the pieces only for the 1st Category.
  11. Competitors must not exceed the maximum duration limit set for each Round. If this is the case, however, the Jury can interrupt the competitor. It is obligatory for every competitor to note the duration of each chosen piece in minutes. Competitors are not obliged to cover the maximum performing time.
  12. All prize winners should be present at the closing ceremony for awarding the prizes, which will take place on 23-9-2006 at the Fortress of the City, including presence by the local authorities.
  13. All rights regarding the recordings and their use (for CD’s, Video, DVD’s, Photographs, Broadcasting or Internet transmission, printed publications etc.) are in favour of the «International SEILER Piano Competition - Rethymno 2006» and competitors have no claim on those rights whatsoever.
  14. All finalists will receive a diploma of participation. A certificate of participation will be issued upon demand for competitors disqualified.
  15. The «International SEILER Piano Competition - Rethymno 2006» bears no responsibility for damage(s) to people and/or objects.

TO APPLY

The candidates can complete and send the enclosed 4-paged application form (pages 15 to 18), typewritten or written by hand in capital letters so as to be easily read, which they should accompany with:

  1. A brief curriculum vitae in fluent english up to 120 words (typewritten or written by hand in capital letters so as to be easily read), including the candidate’s music education (institutes and teachers) and, if available, the candidate’s concerts and/or prizes. The text should be ready for printing in the final programme of the competition.
  2. A photocopy of passport or identity card. (For countries where a visa in obligatory, candidates are required to inform the Artistic Director Agathe Leimoni in time at the phone numbers 0030 2103811757 and 0030 6944248245 or by fax at the number 0030 2103834485 or by e-mail at the address seiler2006@conservatory.edu.gr, because the issue of a visa requires sending a special document-invitation to be sent by the Rethymno Municipality, addressing the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic or Consulat in the candidate’s country.)
  3. Two recent coloured passport photographs.
  4. Photocopies of all the pieces that the candidate will perform.
  5. The application fee is 85 € for the 1st Category: Soloists and 100 € for each duo for the Categories: 2nd for 4 hands and 3rd for 2 pianos. The fee should be deposited to the account number IBAN GR2401100800000008096163061 - Swift Code: ETHNGRAA (BIC), National Bank of Greece, Branch 080, address    Stadiou 38 Athens, the account holder’s name is A. Leimoni or Ch. Pramateftakis and the reason is «Application fee for the International SEILER Piano Competition – Rethymno 2006», no later than 18-8-2006.
  6. The application form, along with all aforementioned supporting documents and photographs and a photocopy of the receipt of the payment order to the bank (of the application/entry fee), should be sent no later than 18-8-2006 to the following address:

ACCOMMODATION - INFORMATION - EVENTS

  1.  The Competition will take place in the city of Rethymno, a magnificent and picturesque city by the sea. Its privileged geographical position in northern Crete allows easy access to the archaeological sites of Knossos and Festos. Arrival in Rethymno is served by the airports of Heraklion and Chania, as well as by the city port, with direct connection to Piraeus, the port of Athens.
  2. The candidates must pay their own traveling (return tickets) and accommodation expenses. Please note that there is a number of low-cost rooms available in luxurious hotels of the area for the competitors and their companions, professors, parents, relatives and friends. The offer prices with the partner hotels for the Competition start at 20 € per person per day with half board. The Artistic Director Agathe Leimoni looks forward to helping you with organizing your accommodation.
  3. During the Competition, more artistic events, such as a Piano Festival and International Piano Masterclasses (for Soloists and Duos), will be held by world famous piano Soloists and Professors. Everyone who is interested in participating in the Masterclasses, candidate or not, in the «International SEILER Piano Competition – Rethymno 2006», is welcome as active or passive participant.
